The Funny Car Fever Nostalgia Reunion at the Sacramento Raceway played host to the third round of the NHRA Heritage Series of nostalgia drag racing. The mild temperatures and excellent track prep, created perfect racing conditions that saw near record runs and tough competition in all the classes. To the delight of the fans there was also a mini Cacklefest on Saturday night that featured 9 historic dragsters. That fired up all together along the return road of the track.
NITRO FUNNY CAR EXHIBITION
The always fan pleasing Nitro Funny Cars came out Saturday to treat the fans to some great racing. Low ET (5.98 @244mph) of the event went to the Rick Aker’s team with John Weaver driving(far lane).
CIFCA SUPERCHARGED FUNNY CARS
California Independent Funny Car Association brought 8 Supercharged, Alcohol burning Funny Cars to Sacramento over the weekend. These cars race on a 7.50 Index and travel from track to track competing for points and cash with the help of Good Vibrations Motorsports. Repeat Funny Car Fever(2015) winner Tony Trimp in the “Happy Hour” Rough and Ready team took home the Wally again this year racing in the final against the(2016) Funny Car Winner Mike Troxel in the “No More Alimony” Trans Am.
AA/GAS
There were two finals for AA/GAS over the weekend. The first being the final for the March Meet between Mike Molia and Gary Reinero, with the win going to Molia in his Willys coupe. The final for this event came down to Molia and Reinero again, with Molia taking the win and taking home two trophies from the event.
A/Fuel
A/Fuel saw another heated 5 second battle between Drew Austin and Kin Bates Sr. With Bates grabbing the #1 qualifier spot with a 5.982 @ 233.32 mph, while Austin ran a 5.986 @ 229.63 mph during first round of eliminations. The final round of A/Fuel came down to Austin and Bates, where Austin would come out victorious with a 6.068 @ 226.92 mph to Bates’ 6.131 @ 217.98 mph.
JR/Fuel
Mission Viejo resident, Don Enriquez would sweep the field by qualifying #1 and defeating Alan Hull in the finals with a 7.169 @ 188.20 mph.
7.0 Pro
It was a battle between two Visalia, California residents, Brad Denney, and Richard Phillips in the final for 7.0 Pro. With Denney coming out victorious with a 7.020 @ 178.80 mph to Phillips’ 7.041 @ 190.94 mph.
A/Gas
The A/Gas final came down to Brendon Frye in his 1957 Chevy Bel Air, against Brian Rogers in his 1967 Chevy Nova. Rogers would beat Frye off the line with a .015 reaction time and run a 7.649 @ 177.30 mph taking the win over Frye who ran a 7.648 @ 177.35 mph.
B/Gas
The final for B/Gas featured a double breakout between Kevin Pope’s 1969 Camaro and Randy Armstrong’s 1957 Bel Air. With Armstrong taking the win, running the closest to the 8.60 index at 8.596 @ 156.79 mph to Pope’s 8.578 @ 154.81 mph.
C/Gas
Ron Coomes would be victorious in C/Gas with his 1967 Corvette by running a 9.684 @ 134.75 mph. To the runner up, Michael Corradi who barely broke out of the 9.60 index with a 9.595 @ 142.72 mph with his 1970 Nova.
D/Gas
Steve Barta, who was the #1 qualifier for D/Gas, would end up taking the top honors for the field. Defeating Dana Griffin who broke, while Barta ran a 10.949 @ 101.03 mph in his 1962 Chevy II.
E/Gas
The E/Gas final was a close one, with a double breakout. Between Tyler Koranda and Dave Sullivan, with Koranda getting the win, running the closest to the 11.60 index with a 11.576 @ 106.72 mph to Sullivan’s 11.560 @ 115.09 mph.
Nostalgia Eliminator I
The Nostalgia Eliminator I final, came down to two tough competitors. With Greg Means in his 1997 Sterling Dragster, squaring off with Sabrina Capps in her 1927 Ford altered roadster. Means would defeat Capps with a 7.669 @ 165.07 mph to Capps’ breakout of 7.549 @ 173.96 mph.
Nostalgia Eliminator II
Tim Beeman would come out victorious in Nostalgia Eliminator II running an 8.628 @ 153.89 mph in his 2008 Tuttle dragster. Defeating Mike Troxel Jr. who broke out with an 8.582 @ 149.31 mph.
Nostalgia Eliminator III
One of the closest finals was in Nostalgia Eliminator III, separated by only two one-thousands of a second, between Jim Miller and Ed DeStaute. With Miller taking the win with a 9.624 @ 127.71 mph over DeStaute’s 9.626 @ 138.94 mph.
Hot Rod
The Hot Rod class had the largest car field, which was wittled down to the final between Kyle Weintz in his 1972 Nova and Chaysse Trimp in a 1969 Opel. The victor would be Weintz who would run a 10.791 @ 110.47 mph to Trimp’s 10.617 @ 129.02 mph.
