Dollinger, Phillips, and Team Craig Racing make the Big Noise at Sacramento Raceway’s 47th Annual Governor’s Cup Championships

dsc_5957

For over a year now Rick Williamson has been unbeatable at Sacramento Raceway. The Stockton, CA driver for Mike and Kathie Craig drove the John Russell-tuned AA/FD to it’s third consecutive nitro title at Sacramento Raceway, including back-to-back Governor’s Cup titles. The Steve Davidson-designed slingshot performed flawlessly throughout the event. In round one against younger brother Bret Williamson driving Mike Fuller’s “Forever Young”, Rick won a close 4.986/215.72 to Bret’s 5.048/231.24 contest for the 1000’ sprint. The final round ended up being a repeat of the 2015 showdown between Team Craig Racing and Sacramento’s Terry Cox and “Cheetah IV”. Williamson took a slight lead at the green light and drove away from Cox with an impressive 4.891/227.46 run. Despite the loss, Cox and team recorded top speed and low elapsed time of the event with an earlier 4.850/234.90 run.

The 7.0 Pro Racers had all their top racers present including Funny Car Fever and Fox Hunt Nite of Fire winners Richard Phillips and Billy McDevitt. Qualifying was paced by Lake Havasu City, AZ’s Richard High with a near-perfect 7.008. High, who is in a tight battle with Steve “Flattop” Faller for the NHRA Heritage Racing Series 7.0 Pro title, broke out with a 6.942 in E2 against McDevitt, ending his weekend. McDevitt would give way in E2 when he lost to Mark Hall on a holeshot. The same fate did not befall Visalia’s Richard Phillips. Phillips defeated Aaron Wardell and Chaysse Trimp with a pair of 7.0s that included a nifty .015 RT against Trimp. Using the same script against finalist Mark Hall, Richard cut a .004 light, hung on to save a run that included some two wheel moments, all the while totally unaware that Hall had fouled at the start.

Also sharing the top billing with the nitro cars and 7.0 Pro Racers were the blown alcohol funny cars of the California Independent Funny Car Association (CIFCA). The top qualifier was Hanford, CA’s Ron and Jennifer Ward with their immaculate” Urban Legend” ’59 Corvette. Unfortunately for Ward, he was shut off on the starting line during the first round of eliminations due to a fuel leak. The team did win the Good Vibrations Motorsports-sponsored burnout contest. With Ward out, #2 Kevin Sarginson took over and would go on to defeat a trio of competitors to make it to the winner’s circle. In the final round against Darrin Hamby, Sarginson’s 7.616 with a .047 RT would end up as the best overall run in eliminations not under the 7.50 index.

In Pro Gas, 53 competitors slugged it out in A/G through E/G. Mike Mossi, the West Coast Pro Gas Association’s 2015 A/G champion parlayed his runner up finish at the Governor’s Cup to repeat as WCPGA champion. Mossi, the #1 qualifier with a with perfect 7.600, lost a thrilling double breakout barn burner to Visalia’s Kris Dollinger—7.574 for Kris to 7.553 for Mike. It was Lee Roberts, who moved up from C/G this year, with the win in B/G. Roberts did it with superior RTs, including an .006 against NHRA Heritage Racing Series leader, Roy Castagnetto, in the semi-finals, and a .002 against Jerry Stayton in the final round. Carl Carlson used that same skill to notch the C/G class. In the final round against Clay Bentson, Carlson’s .002 RT was too much for Clay to run down despite his 9.612 ET. In D/G, Mike Eling had to defeat the largest field of Pro Gas competitors for the five classes. In doing so, he not only won the event but the 2016 WCPGA title, too. In the E/G final round, it was WCPGA 2016 number two, Dan Bagwell, over Roseville’s Randi Rodoni. Randi was late off the starting line (.044 to .069) and broke out trying to run down Dan.

NorCal Drag Bike Association showed up with an all-run field of 17 competitors that included a turbo/nitrous-assisted Suzuki and a Top Fuel Nitro Harley. Summit ET Racing Series star, Brian Jennings, was #1 qualifier with a .010 RT, but #2 Denny Alves (Denzel Alvarez) was the event winner. Alves defeated Sacramento Raceway’s 2016 “King of the Track”, Ed Bradell, in the final round for the cup and the $1000.00 cash prize.
